Nano-Optics and Optoelectronics Research Laboratory
at Masdar Institute of Science and Technology

The Nano-Optics and Optoelectronics Research (NOOR) Laboratory is devoted to research in optics, photonics, optoelectronics, and electronic-photonic integration. The NOOR Lab is a part of the Microsystems Engineering program at Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The Masdar Institute of Science and Technology is located in the center of the future Masdar City, a carbon neutral and a zero waste sustainable city to be powered solely by alternative energy. It is the first graduate research institution in the Middle East dedicated to alternative energy and environmental technologies. In addition to the general research theme of sustainability and green energy, the Institute pursues broader research programs to foster the development of the region and contribute to the economy of Abu Dhabi and the UAE, in line with the Government's ambitious vision of making the UAE a major hub for semiconductor technology and silicon chip manufacturing. Microsystems Engineering Program at Masdar Institute is a multi-disciplinary program which targets devices and systems at the micro- and nano-scale and has curriculum close to one of a traditional Electrical Engineering department. The main research areas of the program are semiconductor electronics, circuits and devices, MEMS, and photonics.

The NOOR lab is a part of the Microsystems Engineering program. NOOR ("light" in Arabic) stands for Nano-optics and optoelectronics research, which well describes our main thrusts directions - miniaturization down to micrometer and nanometer dimensions, and integration of electronics and photonics in a single device or a system.

The NOOR lab unites the Microsystems faculty working in the following areas of optics and photonics: integrated optical devices and circuits, silicon photonics, III-V photonics, fiber optical sensors, chalcogenide glass lasers, electronic-photonic integration. Active research is going on photovoltaics and solar cells, the field of a special potential for the UAE because of abundance of solar energy in the Middle East. More details about ongoing projects can be found on the Research page.

The NOOR lab is growing and we are looking for bright students interested in graduate studies and research in optics and photonics. The students will have an opportunity to work in the state-of-the art laboratories and the clean room which are being built, see the Facilities page for more details. The students will be required to take classes; please check the Classes section for the list of classes offered by the NOOR faculty. All admitted students, regardless the country of origin, are offered full financial support. We occasionally have open post-doc positions. Please check the Open Positions page for the most recent detailed information about applying for graduate studies and post-doc positions at the NOOR Lab.
